Technology with Purpose: Student Learning at the Center

Technology with Purpose: Student Learning at the Center

St. Louis Park Public Schools believes that technology should serve learning.

When students have intentional access to digital tools, they have opportunities to explore, think, create, communicate, collaborate and contribute in meaningful ways.

Why does access to technology matter?

Our focus at St. Louis Park Public Schools is not simply on how much time students spend on devices, but on how and why technology is used to support meaningful learning experiences.

When students have intentional access to digital tools and safe internet resources, they have opportunities to be on the learning journey. As students grow, these opportunities grow with them – from early exploration and creation to research, analysis, problem-solving, multimedia communication, and designing solutions for real audiences.

What does it look like?

Technology is not the learning goal. It is one of the tools students and educators use to support learning. Intentional use means making thoughtful choices about when technology adds value to a learning experience – and when a different way to engage students is more appropriate.

Access to digital tools should help students explore meaningful questions, demonstrate their learning in creative and unique ways, and build the digital skills they need to participate in today's world.

How do we create a safe and supported environment?

Access to technology is only one part of the learning environment. We also work to create conditions that help students use digital tools safely, responsibly, and productively. This includes:

  • Providing school-issued devices and access to digital learning resources
  • Vetting digital tools for curriculum alignment and student data privacy
  • Supporting digital citizenship and online safety
  • Using systems that help protect students while they learn online
  • Giving teachers tools to guide digital learning, reduce distractions, and support classroom routines
  • Helping students build the knowledge, skills, and responsibility needed to use technology well
